The Opportunity

The Senior Researcher is a core part of IDI's Follow the Money initiative, our innovative approach to defending human rights and the environment. The Senior Researcher works closely with the Research Director to translate the research team's strategic goals into clear, actionable activity plans on a quarterly and annual basis.

This position is responsible for managing the team's workflow of investment chain investigations and ensuring deadlines are being met. The role is also responsible for reviewing and editing investigation reports and other research team products, supervising the team's fact-checking interns, leading Follow the Money training modules for external audiences, and staying abreast of the latest developments in the investigative field. The Senior Researcher will also conduct a limited number of high-priority or uniquely complex investment chain investigations themselves and will contribute research and analysis to Inclusive Development International's policy advocacy and casework.

What You'll Do

Strategic Support and Training

• Contribute to the planning and execution of the Follow the Money training program, including selecting participants, working with the operations team to plan logistics, and running learning modules during the in-person workshops.
• Lead additional tailored training sessions, either virtually or in person, when opportunities arise.
• Represent the research team in internal and external meetings, including meetings with civil society partners.

Management and Supervision

• Assist the Research Director with planning and overseeing the research team's activities.
• Manage the research team's workflow of investment chain investigations and ensure deadlines are being met.
• Lead the research team in the Research Director's absence.
• Along with the Research Director, review and edit investment chain reports produced by team members to ensure that the research is accurate and meets the highest possible standards, that the writing is clear and adheres to IDI's house style, and that the reports are consistent with IDI's Follow the Money methodology.

Research

• Conduct a select number of investment chain investigations on complex or high-priority projects.
• Remain abreast of the latest investigative tools and approaches in the field, including the use of OSINT and AI research techniques, and ensure that IDI's Follow the Moneyandreflect these advancements.

What You'll Bring

Qualifications

• At least eight years of experience in investigative/financial journalism, human rights/corporate accountability research, or other research-related field.
• A graduate degree in journalism, corporate investigations, human rights or a research-related field. In lieu of this, an additional two years of experience in a related field.

Competencies and Other Characteristics

• Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor team members.
• Financial literacy, a track record of enterprising investigative journalism, or experience with corporate accountability or due diligence research.
• Strong writer who can communicate complex topics in a clear and accessible manner.
• Strong editor and reviewer of written work and ability to provide counsel and feedback in a constructive manner.
• Detailed planner capable of managing a team's workflow and ensuring deadlines are being met.
• Tenacious, diligent researcher who is willing to turn over every stone in pursuit of information that can change lives.
• A passion for advancing corporate accountability and social, economic and environmental justice.
• Comfortable working with colleagues and partners across multiple countries, time zones and cultures.
• Highly motivated and intellectually curious, with a close attention to detail.
• Experience living or working in the Global South is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

Inclusive Development International is committed to providing competitive, equitable and transparent compensation for staff. The starting salary for this position will be $78,000-$90,000 is based on demonstrated competencies and responsibilities, with a geographic differential applied based on city in accordance with our Compensation Framework.

Working Arrangement:

The Inclusive Development International team is globally dispersed, with most employees working on a fully remote basis. Our main office is located in Asheville, North Carolina. This position is open to applicants based in the United States within the U.S. Eastern time zone. Asheville-based candidates have the option to work on a hybrid basis (mix of work from home and onsite).

You must have obtained legal authorization to work and live in the United States. Inclusive Development International is unable to sponsor work visas.

Management responsibilities:

This position directly supervises the team's fact-checking interns.

Travel:

3 to 5 international trips per year are expected.
